What is Pod Coffee?
Pod coffee is coffee brewed in a particular type of coffee maker. The pod is a filter paper which contains
a pre-measured amount of coffee. It is very similar to a tea bag, only the coffee pod is placed in a
protective pouch, nitrogen-flushed and then sealed. The pod is a single use product that stays as fresh as
the day it was made until it is opened.
Many people enjoy pod coffee for the convenience. There is no need to keep a #10 can of coffee around, no
need to measure, and no messy coffee filter to deal with. Simply place the pod in the coffee maker, and add
the water to the reservoir. Pressurized water runs through the pod, and within a few seconds, the cup of
coffee is ready.
In the past, there were few varieties of coffee pods available, and consumers were not very satisfied with the
taste or variety, only using them for convenience. Pod coffee systems have made a lot of progress over
the last few years. Now there are nearly 50 brands of pod coffee makers on the market, with numberless brews,
roasts, tastes and varieties available. Regular, gourmet, decaffeinated, espresso, hot cocoa and tea pods are
some of the new products. Many pods work with several brands of coffee makers so the consumer can choose the
coffee maker with the options he or she wants and then buy the pods.
Some of the new technologies in pod coffee making include the K-cup by Kuerig and T-discs by Tassimo.
These cups and discs are the same concept as a pod, but the coffee is contained in a small, sealed cup that is
punctured by the coffee maker when placed inside.
Many people would prefer to make their own pods, as most pods for purchase cost at least $.50 each. There
are three options making coffee pods. The first is T-Sacs which are disposable tea bags that can be filled
with coffee. The second is the Ecopad, a refillable filter made for the Senseo brand. The newest pod
maker is the Perfect Pod Maker, by Coffee Giant. It is essentially a heated press. The filter is placed
in the machine, then it is filled with ground coffee. The top of the filter is put in place and the lid is
closed for five to eight seconds. It is a cheaper option, but only works with eight brands of coffee
makers.
People who have not wanted to drink pod coffee in the past should give it another look. With new
technologies, new tastes, and new looks, it’s almost like a new product.
