There are three types of single cup coffee makers: closed system, automatic drip and press. The automatic drip coffee makers usually have little to set them apart from the competition. Black and Decker offers a permanent filter and 15 oz. travel mug. Hamilton Beach sells a Brewstation 12 cup coffee maker that brews 12 cups at a time and keeps it all inside the machine where it will stay warm until someone places a mug under the spout and triggers it to flow.

The newer technology, the closed system one cup coffee maker, offers lots of choice. For use in a closed system coffee maker, the coffee grounds, or makings for another beverage, are enclosed in some type of sealed container. This container is then placed inside the coffee maker, the contents accessed and the coffee brewed. These systems are similar to the pod coffee maker, but the K-Cups, T-Discs and Filterpacks come in many different flavors and strengths.

Most of these coffee makers offer the option of making hot chocolate, tea, and many –ccino drinks. A definite advantage to these systems is that there is no cleaning required after brewing. The disadvantage, though, is that the price per cup, depending on the brand, is usually high.

The press version of a one cup coffee maker is either the French press or the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso maker. To use a French press, simply pour the desired amount of grounds into the bottom of the carafe, add nearly boiling water, put the lid and wait a few minutes. After the coffee has brewed, press the plunger down slowly, to allow the liquid to pass through the filter and the grounds to remain below it. One advantage to the French press coffee maker is that once it is purchased, the only future expense will be the coffee.

The other press version coffee maker is the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso makers. It uses the same concept as the French press, however, it comes in many pieces, a filter cup, a stirrer, extra filters, etc. It is almost a forced drip coffee maker, the grounds are placed above a filter in a cup and the hot water is placed in next. After a few minutes brewing, a plunger is depressed that forces air through the system, and the water through the coffee.

Anyone looking for a one cup coffee maker will have plenty of choices. The consumer can demand the options he or she wants because they are available. Below you'll find more information about some of these specific single-serve coffee makers.
