Gevalia Gourmet Coffee
Gevalia is the largest coffee roaster in Scandinavia. It was first introduced in Sweden in 1920.
Gevalia was a family owned company for 120 years, until it was sold to Kraft Foods in 1971. The coffee is still
blended and roasted in Gevle, Sweden. Gevalia began mail-order sales in North America in 1983.
Gevalia coffee is marketed as a premium, gourmet brand in the US.
Gevalia offers membership in a club called Gevalia Kaffe. When someone joins the club he or she is
sent a free gift, usually a 12-cup coffee maker, which the club member keeps even if membership in the club is
dropped. For a monthly fee, members receive four bags of coffee every six to eight weeks. The member
picks the coffee. Gevalia offers over 40 premium coffees in regular or decaffeinated, ground or whole bean.
The majority of these coffees are Arabica. Coffee pods and tea are also available.
The coffee makers offered for sale by Gevalia are high-end and durable. They offer coffee makers that brew
only a single serving, coffee makers that brew 32 cups, and everything in between. Their espresso maker
is produced in Italy and grinds, tamps and brews, then deposits the used grounds in an internal chamber. The
grinder is ceramic and gives the user control over the density of the grind. They offer a coffee/espresso
maker that also makes cappuccino, lattes and hot chocolate.
Another Gevalia product is the Tassimo Hot Beverage System. It makes coffee, cappuccinos, lattes,
espresso, crema, tea and hot chocolate using T-Discs (a small cup holding the makings of the chosen beverage, which
produces a single serving). A dual carafe 12-cup coffee maker is also available.
Gevalia coffees can be purchased through the mail, by the case, in variety packs, seasonal flavors, Gevalia
brand roasts and flavors, and there are many more options.
Master Taster Willy Pettersson has been with Gevalia for forty years. He is a master in the science of
cupping to determine which beans and blends meet the Gevalia standards. Cupping is a process during which
coffee judges (cuppers) smell, taste and drink cups of coffee to determine the taste, acidity, aftertaste and body
of a variety of coffees. Each variety and flavor of coffee must meet his standards before Gevalia will offer
that coffee for sale.
The name Gevalia has become synonymous with rich, full-bodied coffees that are conveniently delivered right to
your doorstep.
