Flavia began selling their systems in 1984.  Their patented technology uses a single serving “filterpack” to brew the beverage.  The filterpack is a flat foil pack that the consumer slides into a slot in the machine, and then hot water is squirted through the pack into the cup.  Wait time for the beverage is anywhere from a minute and a half to three minutes. When the filterpack is used up (one time usage), it is discarded.  The Flavia Creation 400, which is made for office use, discards the filterpack by itself and neatly stores it away in a tray inside the machine, which the consumer is periodically reminded to empty.

Since the filterpacks are sealed, and only opened moments before brewing, the coffee is never stale.  In offices, using this system lets everyone pick their own flavor of coffee, and eliminates the pot of coffee that has been sitting on the burner for three hours.  Another upside to this system is that nobody has to clean the coffee maker at the end of the day.  Each consumer throws away his or her used filterpack and cleanup is finished.
Flavia is making a product comparable to that found in nationwide coffee houses, but for about 50 cents a cup, instead of $4.00.

There are over 30 differently flavored filterpacks to use, and Flavia is promising more in the near future.  A couple of the filterpacks are more dessert-ish, like the Mars Swirl (Flavia is owned by M&M Mars).  A line of decaffeinated teas are labeled as their Wellbeing beverages, and –ccinos can be made by placing a latte creamer packet in first.

For the home, they have a smaller coffee maker that will dispense up to six cups before the reservoir needs to be refilled.   All the of the features of the larger Flavia systems are available, this coffee maker is simply smaller, and available in red, blue or black.

Flavia drink stations have been helping office employees avoid stale coffee for 24 years now, as Flavia is the only line of single-serve, closed system coffee makers marketed to offices.  As their drink repertoire grows, so will their consumer base.
