For those who love to wake up to the smell of coffee, but are also very insistent on having the freshest coffee possible, a coffee maker/grinder combo is just the thing.  It’s an automatic-drip coffee maker that grinds the coffee beans immediately before brewing.  This may seem like a dream come true to some, but it’s a fairly expensive dream.  High end combination machines may cost as much as $300.

The Jura-Capresso 455 CoffeeTEAM Therm Coffee Maker w/ Thermal Carafe is perhaps top of the line.  It is pricey, but most likely worth it for all the options it has.  The 10-cup thermal carafe will keep coffee hot for several hours.  The machine can be programmed to grind 4, 6, 8 or 10 cups and mild, regular or strong brew strength can be selected.  This combo machine uses a solid steel conical burr grinder, which can be adjusted to one of four fineness settings.  The grinding process takes place at the back of the machine and then the filter swings forward to brew, keeping moisture away from the grinder.

For the consumer not wanting to spend quite that much money, the Melitta MEMB1B Mill and Brew costs far less than the Jura-Capresso.  It is a 10 cup machine that can be programmed for 4, 6, 8 or 10 cups and also for fineness of the grind.  This machine uses a steel blade grinder, so there is the possibility of lost flavor and aroma from the heat of the grinder.  There aren’t as many options on the Melitta, but if all that is needed is a basic coffee maker/grinder, this will do the job.

Kalorik has produced the Magic Bean, which is the world’s only one-cup coffee maker/grinder.  It will grind and brew up to four individual cups of coffee, but dispenses only one at a time.  It allows the consumer to control the strength of the coffee and also includes a travel cup for on-the-go coffee.

The Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-cup combination machine is a nice bargain.  This machine offers all the options of the Jura-Capresso 455, but at about half the price.
When shopping around for coffee maker/grinders, there are many factors to consider.  Have past coffee makers warranted brand loyalty?  Are certain features more important than others?  Does it have a blade or burr grinder?  How many cups can be brewed at one time?  And also, how much money is allotted for this purchase?

Coffee maker/grinders save consumers time and money by allowing them to purchase whole coffee beans, but they also offer the convenience of another five minutes in bed!
